Jewelry 101 Care & Storage
Many of us have that piece of fine jewelry that holds a special place in our hearts, often given by a loved one to mark a special occasion or inherited from a parent or other relative. Or perhaps it was a self-purchase to keep a particular accomplishment, or “just because”. With Valentine’s Day near, now is the perfect time to focus on jewelry care and storage.
Over time, gems can lose their luster, and metals can get tarnished. Also, chains can become tangled if not stored correctly, and earrings can get separated. We asked Jalpa Pandit, a certified gemologist and owner of Jalpa Pandit Bespoke Fine Jewelry and Revival, for some valuable tips on making your jewels last a lifetime.
Jalpa’s Tips For Diamond Rings
Have a designated spot for your rings so that you always have one go-to location for safe storage, such as a ring holder.
Remove rings while showering or cleaning to avoid chemicals and soap build-up. It’s also wise to remove your rings while exercising or doing any heavy work to avoid denting the metal or having prongs get caught in something and break off.
Once (or twice) a week, use a DIY Diamond cleaner to maintain shine. The cleaner requires warm soapy water, mild detergent, and a toothbrush designated for that purpose.
Once per year, take your rings to your jeweler for a “physical”.
Jalpa’s Tips For 14k and 18k Jewelry
Apply perfumes, lotions, etc before putting on your jewelry.
Like diamonds, clean gold with warm, soapy water and mild detergent. Dry gently with a cloth.
Although not always easy, try and avoid heavy chemical hand sanitizers and moisturizers with your jewelry. Be especially careful if the piece has softer or more porous stones such as pearls, turquoise, or opals.

And Remember ….
Jewelry is no different from organizing and decluttering anything else, if you don’t love it or wear it, consider selling it, or passing it down to someone who may get more use out of it. Or, you can also contact Jalpa www.jalpapandit.com and have her remake it into something you will love.
