How We Feel About Stuff
Do you have trouble letting go of stuff, especially if you have had the item for many
years? As an organizer, I have seen it all, and I make no judgment. You see, I am not
immune to the feeling of sometimes wanting to keep things beyond the date of when I
should have let them go. The case in point? The other day, I donated a coat from the
late 1990s.
The thing is, I think I wore it maybe five or six times from then until now, so it was still in
great shape. It moved with me twice and has seen the closet of three homes I’ve lived
in. It was expensive, which was my reason (or excuse) for keeping it all these years. I
kept telling myself that I would wear it more. I have bought and gotten rid of many other
coats since I owned this one.
And I cannot forget the impossibly uncomfortable blue wedge sandals. I wore them
twice, and they then sat in my closet for several years, like they were somehow,
miraculously going to get more comfortable. Out (donated) they finally went for
someone else to enjoy.
